From a grade G to a PhD

11 Feb 2019

Be brave they said. Be honest they said. So, this is the story, all about how, my life got twisted upside down. Wait, who let Will Smith in here...? Get outta here. You too, Carlton.

This story is actually sang to the beat of Lukas Graham – 7 Years.

Listening to the 7 Years song will help you keep to the rhythm. Once you get to verses 14 years and 15 years below then you'll need to rewind each time to 1:05. Then just let it play out.

P.S. In case you didn't know it was a thing. Grade G was worse than an F in my day.

Once I was 7 years old

My daddy told me

‘Go and see your friends

I’ve been too busy lately’

Once I was 7 years old

It was tough at school

As parents’ fights grew bigger

Pushing each other to the limits

Was I the trigger?

By 11, dad had left me

and my little brother

Constant tears were falling

Now without a father figure

Once I was 11 years old

My mama told me

Go get yourself to school or you’ll be nowhere

Once I was 11 years old

I always had bad dreams

And no one knew or heard me

So, I started hiding places

No one ever found me

Something about the mornings

They were really scary

But what to do and how to be

Will anybody ever really know me

Rewind to 1:05

Once I was 14 years old

I rarely went to school

I knew my grades were falling

So, I tried to make amends

To fill the void inside me

Something about the learning

Just seemed to really bore me

I got a letter through from school to say

My average grades were a G

Rewind to 1:05

Once I was 15 years old

I’d never felt like this

A teacher started believing

So, I started writing words, I started really trying

Something about the mornings

Became no longer boring

And the subjects that I loved

Began to really know me

Once I was 30 years old

My story got told

I made it back from a grade G to a PhD

Once I was 30 years old

I clearly see my goals

I don't get scared of failure

'Cause I know the smallest voices

Can become the saviour

I've got my knowledge with me

This was my game changer

And setting up a company

Was for now and not left ‘til later

Once I was 30 years old

My story got told

I was writing about everything I saw before me

Once I was 30 years old

Soon we’ll be 40 years old

Our words have been sold

We’ve travelled around the world

And we’re still writing

Soon we’ll be 40 years old

I’m still learning about life

My wife brought children for me

So, I can hug them tight at night and always read them stories

And when my daughter asks me

‘Daddy can you play with me’

I say ‘Yes, of course. You be Peach, I’ll be Luigi’

Soon I’ll be 60 years old

My time's now closing in

Remember life and then yours becomes a better one

I made a client so happy when I wrote a leave piece once

I hope my children come and visit once or twice a month

Soon I’ll be 60 years old

Will I think the world is cold?

Or will I have my loving family who can warm me?

Soon I’ll be 60 years old

Soon we’ll be 60 years old

Will we think the world is cold?

Or will we think about our journeys to help warm us?

Soon we’ll be 60 years old

Once I was 7 years old

My daddy told me

‘Go and see your friends

I’ve been too busy lately’

Once I was 7 years old

If you’re feeling lost, stuck, or lost and stuck – wherever you are in life – don’t give up hope. Things can get better. Search for your believers, those small voices, the saviours. They’re out there somewhere.

Note: Although these lyrics might have put my old man in a bad light, he's actually one of the nicest men you'll ever meet. You see things differently as a child (hence why each verse is seen through the eyes of the version of me at that time). And I now know that he always had good intentions; life just threw challenges at him that he couldn't control.
